The Music Video in 2012

The role of music videos seems to have changed over the past couple decades. Television stations such as MTV, VH1, and BET have slowly pushed away their music video slots and replaced them with game shows, reality TV, and other similar programs. Music videos themselves are still being released on a daily basis, but now it’s mostly through the web using sites like YouTube and Vimeo. So how exactly has this changed things?

Lightning in a Bottle 2012
Last weekend, I went to a wonderful festival known as Lightning in a Bottle in Silverado, CA. The festival was held from Thursday until Monday morning. Lightning in a Bottle is created by The Do LaB, known for their work at Coachella. The festival had about 7,000 people who were much more respectful than most festival goers - they made sure to throw away all of their trash and left nothing behind. It was a mixed group of ages ranging from youngsters to seniors. Everyone was there for their love for music. There were some well known DJs such as Glitch Mob and Bassnectar as well as some other underground DJs who were equally talented. The festival had also featured plenty of artwork such as paintings, structures, and even interactive media. There were so many happy faces and everyone was generous and helpful. All of the live shows took place at amazing handcrafted stages such as the Bamboo Stage or Woogie Stage. It was amazing to be apart of a community which was so loving and caring for the environment. The music literally played for four days straight and it is truly an experience that I’m excited to participate in again next year.
Review: Suis La Lune - Riala
Occasionally, an album comes by that just floors you. The words inspire you and the music moves you. On a whim, I checked out Sweden’s own Suis La Lune’s new release “Riala” the other day, having heard their single “Friends” from their split with Osceola. “Friends” was a technically complicated and musically diverse track, exemplifying Suis La Lune’s solid grasp on song writing and mastery of their instruments - Riala furthered that impression to a much greater degree. From the dissonant feedback kicking off “Cornea” all the way to the climactic finish of “One and All, Every Bit,” Riala grabs you and refuses to let your ears go. I’d highly recommend checking out the title track (featured above) and the album as a whole even if you’re not a big fan of the genre.
Riala is available through Topshelf Records.
Suis La Lune is on Facebook and Last.fm.
General Topics InspirationsBMW: Drive for Team USA [Pictures]

Last week, BMW stopped by Los Angeles Center Studios with some new 3 Series as part of their Drive for Team USA campaign. For each test drive completed, BMW donated ten dollars to Team USA for the London 2012 Olympics. We stopped by to test drive one for ourselves and had a blast driving around Los Angeles.
Here are some of the pictures we took of the event and the new 2012 3 Series.

Last month we shared some of the albums that were on our cassette players and this month we’re continuing the trend. While not necessarily holiday themed, we think your winter vacation will be much improved if you have a listen to any of the following albums. Enjoy!

Fooled by Randomness - A Review
Over Thanksgiving break, I finished reading Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and in Life
. While the book uses the financial world as the basis for its illuminating look into the world of luck and our perceptions of it, the lessons it imparts are valuable for evaluating our own experiences with chance and volatility in every day life.

Some Shots from Abroad

I recently got back from a trip in Europe. While I’ll spare you every detail of my journey, I thought I would at least post these skeletons I found on the streets of Paris. A little bit late for Halloween, but still.
