5 Good Examples of YouTube Takeovers
YouTube takeovers are an effective way to make a bold statement about a product or service. In general, a YouTube takeover appears to be a normal YouTube page but as the advertisement proceeds, the typical YouTube video viewing experience is drastically altered in some way.
An excellent example of a successful YouTube takeover is the advertisement at the top of this post created for the movie The Expendables. In it, Stallone is interrupted during an interview by a squad of assassins and proceeds to battle it out across the webpage.
Firebreather
Another good example is for the Firebreather movie from Cartoon Network. Similar to the Expendables advertisement, a dragon destroys the surrounding YouTube page and even sets off a virtual fire alarm.
In this Snickers takeover, comedian Richard Lewis shows you that you’re him when you’re hungry. The page is Snickers branded and transforms into Lewis’ cynical look at the internet experience after watching a short video of Lewis unhappily chopping wood.
Using momentum from the Super Bowl, this ad further showcased VW’s new Beetle. Similar to the first two examples, it also ultimately results in the destruction of the YouTube page as the beetle races across the YouTube page.

This famous ad lets the user decide the fate between a hesitant hunter and a marauding bear. The results are humorous but this takeover’s shining feature is how it lets users interact with it.
While all of these are excellent experiences and advertisements, it seems that the general trend for advertisers has been to create a YouTube takeover that results in the destruction of the page. YouTube takeovers require a high media-spend so not everyone can take a crack at them, but it will be interesting to see how these advertisements can get even more interactive.
