Social Media: How to Upload a Facebook App

Facebook Upload

Working with platforms and API’s can be tricky business, especially if you don’t come from a development background like myself. Facebook in particular can be a fickle mistress, changing the way it integrates with your product or website and how your applications can work within its larger framework.

After stumbling around in the dark for a little bit, I finally figured out how to upload a Facebook App to a Facebook Page. Since I’ve been writing a guide on how to do some of these things for our business, I thought I’d share how to do it for those who might find themselves in a position similar to my own -

(1) Log into whatever Facebook account you want to publish the App with and search for the Developer App in the search bar.
To create a new app, click on [+ Set up New App] in the top right hand corner.

(3) Select the app name and agree to Facebook terms.
(4) Enter the correct information about the app. Make sure to upload both a logo and an icon. The most important is the canvas page and the canvas URL. The canvas URL links to where you are hosting the app.
(5) After you have correctly created the app, log in to the Facebook account with admin privileges for the Facebook page where the app will be placed.
(6) Go to the app’s profile page and click [Add to My Page] on the left hand side of the page. Select the page where the app will go.

(7) Go to the Facebook page where the app will be. In the upper left hand corner you should see a list of apps. If you do not see your app, click [More] at the bottom of the list and you should see your app.
(8) To adjust the position of the app in the list, click [Edit] at the bottom of the app list. Then drag and drop your app to the appropriate area.
(9) To change how the app name appears in the list, navigate to the Facebook page where the app is and select [Edit Page]. Click Apps on the left hand side. Click [Edit Settings] underneath the app. This will allow you to change and save the name.

This will probably change in the near future, but for right now I hope this helps out some of you. If I’ve missed anything, let me know. Happy app-ing.
